Best Destination Wedding Locations in India
Most guides to the best wedding places in India are written by people trying to sell you one of them. Hotel chains list their own properties. Directories lists whoever pays. Magazine listicles rank on how the photographs look.
We run a heritage hotel in Jaisalmer, so we have an obvious interest in one corner of this. What follows tries to be useful anyway, because the honest answer to “where should we get married” depends on your guest list, your budget and your dates, and for plenty of couples the right answer isn’t Rajasthan at all.
Here’s what actually separates these places from each other.

Treat these as planning bands, not quotations. Property tier moves them more than anything else.
Rajasthan: The Default, and Why?
About a third of all destination weddings in India take place in Rajasthan, and it’s not just because of the palaces. The state has a supply chain that has been in the making for four decades. Decor teams, florists, live musicians, horse handlers, wedding planners who have planned hundreds of weddings. You can pull off a grand-scale wedding here using only local vendors, which is not always the case elsewhere.
Udaipur
The most lavish weddings take place in Udaipur, the most expensive wedding destination in India. Lake Pichola, the City Palace, Taj Lake Palace. The premium is a supply problem more than anything: there are only so many lake-facing properties and the demand for them is enormous. Expect to pay 30 to 40 percent more than comparable standard elsewhere in Rajasthan, and book eighteen months ahead for peak dates.
Jaipur
Most couples opt for Jaipur as the destination of choice. It has more venues across more price points than any other destination wedding city in India, direct flights from everywhere, and enough vendor competition to keep prices honest. A Jaipur wedding can cost ₹25 lakh or ₹3 crore depending entirely on which door you walk through.
Jodhpur
Jodhpur is based on Mehrangarh and Umaid Bhawan, and the blue city is a stunning view. There are fewer properties compared to Jaipur, so the scope for negotiation is less.
Jaisalmer
This is where we are, so picture that as you read this. For authentic heritage architecture, this is the cheapest of the four because it is located farthest from the main circuit. Also, it is the desert that the others do not have. The Sam Sand Dunes are 45 minutes away; a wedding here would have a camel safari at Sam, watching sunset on the dunes between two functions. Our guests who sat through three weddings in Jaipur see the difference immediately.
The trade-off is access. Jaisalmer Airport operates on a seasonal schedule from October to March with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai and connections from Ahmedabad and Jaipur, corresponding to the wedding season. Outside of those months, guests travel through Jodhpur, necessitating a drive.
Pushkar and Bikaner
Pushkar and Bikaner are worth mentioning for the smaller budget. Authentic heritage properties, lower costs, and much fewer weddings competing for the same weekend.
Goa: The Other Default
Goa is the second most popular destination wedding location in India, and it attracts a completely different couple. There are beach ceremonies, later start times, guests who want to swim between functions, and a general looseness that a palace wedding doesn’t have.
The window is from November to February. The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, is truly unsuitable for outdoor activities.
The catch is that beach weddings require permits, and there are regulations regarding amplified music after 10 pm. You either have to host the sangeet indoors or expect it to end early. North Goa is more vibrant and crowded, while South Goa is more serene, resort-oriented, and preferred for big weddings.
At the same number of guests, the cost is considered lower than Rajasthan due to the room rates being lower than the top resorts.
Kerala: Underrated for Intimate Weddings
Kerala is suitable for guest lists of less than 120. There are backwater resorts around Alleppey and Kumarakom, plantation resorts in Munnar, and heritage hotels in Fort Kochi.
You get a backdrop that no interior designer could possibly emulate, and a reduced overall cost compared to almost all other venues on this list. The trade-off is space. The majority of properties in Kerala are not equipped to handle 200 wedding guests, and those that do have a limited capacity.
The season runs from October to March. The cuisine is a significant selling point and could easily be the focus of the menu instead of a north Indian buffet.
The Hills: Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Shimla, Landour
The purpose of hill weddings is to be the opposite of everywhere else. April to June, or September to November, when it is too hot in Rajasthan, or everyone else is booked.
Rishikesh is trending rapidly. With a spiritual vibe that suits some couples and not others, these are the lowest entry prices on this list with a riverside property right on the Ganga. Note that many properties here are dry, and some don’t allow non-vegetarian catering.
Mussoorie and Landour offer colonial properties and cool weather. Shimla offers the same. The problem with all of these is road access. Guests arrive after a long, winding drive, elderly relatives struggling. Even the décor and equipment cost more to get up the hill.
Near Mumbai: Lonavala and Alibaug
It’s not luxurious, but the logistics are spot on. Only a two-to-three-hour drive from Mumbai, guests can make it for the three-day wedding celebrations without booking a flight or taking any leave from work. For almost everyone in Mumbai, that saves way more than any discount could offer.
Alibaug has more upscale properties. Lonavala offers a larger variety and more affordable rates.
Agra: The One-Trick Destination
The attraction of the Taj Mahal is huge. Many properties have a view of the Taj, and it’s hard to dispute a wedding photograph against that backdrop.
Aside from the monument, over the course of 3 days, Agra has the least to offer guests of any destination on this list. It works if your purpose is the Taj, but it doesn’t work if you want to keep your guests engaged between different functions.
Andaman: the Beach Alternative
What the Andamans provide that Goa doesn’t is actual remoteness and water that photographs like the Maldives. The limitations are drastic, though. Limited flights, limited room inventory, everything from flowers to lighting imported and a practical ceiling of 80 to 100 guests.
Great for an intimate wedding where you want the venue to do all the talking. For 200 guests, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
How to Actually Choose?
How many guests, and where are they flying from?
This is the biggest single cost driver and it eliminates half the destinations immediately. A 250-guest wedding rules out most of Kerala, the Andamans, and the smaller hill properties. If two-thirds of your guests are in Mumbai, Alibaug just becomes very attractive.
Which month?
Your dates might have already determined your destination. Rajasthan and Goa in December, hills in May, Kerala in January. Battling the season costs money and comfort in equal measure.
What’s your budget per head?
Take your total and divide it by the number of guests you expect. If it’s less than ₹30,000 per head, chances are you’re shopping in Rishikesh, Lonavala, or a third-tier property in Jaipur. If it’s over ₹80,000, Udaipur becomes a possibility. This figure reveals a lot more than the total.
What do guests do between functions?
Most weddings have long gaps. Somewhere with a fort, a beach or a desert nearby gives guests a reason to enjoy the trip. Somewhere with nothing means everyone sits in their rooms.

There’s a real saving in the shoulder months. Late September and early October in Rajasthan, or April in Goa, can cut 20 to 30 percent off peak rates. Weekday dates help further.
Choosing Between Destination Wedding Venues in India
Once you have selected a location, the main question remaining about the venue is: How many rooms does the venue have?
A wedding where all guests stay in one property is a different experience altogether to one that is spread across three hotels with coaches shuttling between the two. Guests mingle, no one misses the any ceremony because their driver got lost or may be any other reason, you’re not shelling out for transportation between functions.
Ask for the number of rooms before requesting the rate card when comparing wedding venues in India. A hotel with over 100 rooms can accommodate 150 to 200 guests. If there are less than 50 rooms, consider reducing or splitting the list.
Early on, there are two other questions you should ask. Does the site allow outside vendors, and at what cost? And what is the actual music policy after 10pm, as this varies greatly and can quietly sabotage your sangeet plans.

Do you require permissions for a beach or outdoor wedding?
Usually yes. In Goa and the Andamans, beach weddings require clearances, and drone use, fireworks and late-night amplified music require separate permissions almost everywhere. Your venue or planner should take care of this, but do check them out in writing.
